31 Unique October Journal Prompts If You Feel Guilty For Falling Behind

When women support women, great things happen. Sharing this post 👇 is a quick way to help a woman-owned business.

Time goes by too fast. You’ve planned so many things, and you were sure you’d achieve many goals by the end of the year.

But now October is right around the corner, and you’re panicking. You still have so much to do and achieve.

If you started January with a list of goals and you haven’t touched half of them, you’re not the only one…I’m in the same boat. This year was rough for me.

That’s why I put together 31 October journal prompts, so you (and I) can look back at the last 9 months. But don’t start feeling guilty. Sometimes life doesn’t go as planned.

These journal prompts will help you get clear and will motivate you to finish the year strong.

Why You Feel So Far Behind Once October Hits

You feel behind in October because you’re comparing where you are right now to the goals you wrote in January.

And all these months feel like proof that you didn’t change anything.

We all hit this same wall once the last quarter of the year starts. I can tell you from my own experience….I look at my goal list, and I feel defeated.

I kept repeating this sentence for the past couple of days – you know the sentence: “Damn, I’m behind again!”

But here’s the reality. Life is unpredictable. For example, on 9th of February 2026, my dog Ciara suddenly died. And for a month, I was basically paralyzed.

What helped me a lot was journaling about grief and talking to a picture of her (I do that daily).

So don’t be too hard on yourself. Stuff happens, and that’s just how it is. But it’s all about what you do now.

And a quiet reset will help you way more than planning everything all over again. You just need a bit more clarity, that’s all. That’s exactly what these October prompts are built to do.

October Journal Prompts For Looking Back At Your Year Honestly (Days 1 to 8)

These are the October journal prompts to start with. They’ll help you look back at the whole year. But don’t try to feel guilty about anything.

So start here before you try to fix anything else. Take one prompt per day, sit down for 10-20 minutes, and just write.

  • Day 1: What did you actually hope this year would look like back in January?
  • Day 2: Where are you closer to that hope than you expected, even a little?
  • Day 3: What’s one thing that happened this year you didn’t see coming?
  • Day 4: Which part of this year taught you the most, and why?
  • Day 5: What’s one goal you’re glad you let go of?
  • Day 6: What did you put the most energy into this year that you’d handle differently if you started over?
  • Day 7: What’s something you did this year that your January self would be proud of?
  • Day 8: If you had to describe this year in one honest sentence, what would it say?

October Journal Prompts For Noticing The Pattern You Keep Repeating (Days 9 to 16)

These October journal prompts will maybe sting a little bit, because you’re going to notice things that you do every year without even realizing it.

Remember: you can’t change a pattern if you don’t first notice it.

  • Day 9: What’s a problem that keeps showing up in your life?
  • Day 10: When you’re stressed, what’s the first thing you usually do that you already know doesn’t help?
  • Day 11: What do you keep telling yourself you’ll change once things calm down?
  • Day 12: What does this year have in common with last year?
  • Day 13: What’s one thing you keep saying you’ll change and don’t?

If Day 13 made you go quiet for a second, that’s usually the sign there’s more underneath it. Seeing a pattern is one thing. Understanding why it keeps happening is another. That’s the exact gap my 600+ Shadow Work Journal Prompts are built to close, if you ever want to go past noticing and actually fix it.

  • Day 14: Whose approval are you still working for without realizing it?
  • Day 15: What would you do differently this month if nobody was watching or grading you?
  • Day 16: What’s a habit you picked up this year that you already know isn’t serving you well?

October Journal Prompts For Forgiving What You Didn’t Finish (Days 17 to 23)

These journal prompts for October will help you make peace with the goals you’re not going to hit this year. And yes, that’s important, so guilt doesn’t eat you up.

You can always achieve the goals next year.

  • Day 17: What goal from January are you finally ready to let go of, without guilt?
  • Day 18: What’s something you’re still doing “because you said you would,” even though it stopped mattering to you?
  • Day 19: Who do you need to stop comparing your year to?
  • Day 20: What would you tell a close friend if she had your exact year?
  • Day 21: What’s one thing you didn’t finish that taught you more than finishing it would have?
  • Day 22: What does “enough” look like for the rest of this year?
  • Day 23: What’s a mistake you made this year that you’ve already punished yourself enough for?
